Frequently Asked Questions
All residents of Iowa are entitled to a library card through the Gibson Memorial Library. A photo ID with a current address is required to sign up for a library card. If your ID does not have a current mailing address, your photo ID along with a piece of mail with your current mailing address will be accepted. Library cards are free of charge if you do not currently have an account with us. Children aged 5 and older may receive their own library card as long as a parent/guardian is present and can provide their signature accepting responsibility for any lost or damaged materials. Those aged 16 years and older may sign up for their own library card. If you are already a cardholder with us and lost your library card, the library will charge $2 for a replacement card.

Yes, the Gibson Memorial Library has multiple public computers that anyone may use. If you are a cardholder with us, you are able to log onto any one of our public computers without letting us know you will be using a computer. To log onto our computers, you will use your library card number that is located on the back of your library card as your user name. The password will be the phone number currently listed as your primary phone number on your library account. If you do not have a library card with us, we can issue you a guest pass that will only allow you to use a public computer for a limited time. If you plan on using our public computers on a frequent basis, it would be in your best interest to sign up for a library card.
Yes, the Gibson Memorial Library offers Libby for library patrons with an address in Creston or one of our contracted cities (Afton, Shannon City, Lorimor, Thayer, Cromwell). More information on how to get started with Libby can be found here.
You can always check our online catalog first to see if we have a book you are looking for. Our online catalog can be found here. If you do not see the book you are looking for, there are a few other options we can try. If you are looking for a brand new book, let us know and we can consider the title as a purchase request, meaning we may possibly buy it for the library collection. If the book you are looking for is not new, inter-library loan may be of interest to you. With inter-library loan, our library attempts to request the title from one of the other libraries in the state of Iowa. You would then be able to check it out through us with your Gibson Memorial Library card free of charge. If we are not able to locate the book through inter-library loan, we may suggest Libby, our e-book app.
The Gibson Memorial Library itself accepts donations in the form of new or like new books and DVDs that have been published or released recently. Donated materials that we are not able to use will be passed onto our Friends of the Library group that raises additional funds for our library. Large book donations can be dropped off directly at the Friends of the Library book sale location, which can be found at the Creston News Advertisor.
At this moment in time, the Gibson Memorial Library has educational hotspots available for checkout provided to us by our Friends of the Library group through the US Cellular After School Access Project. For more information about our
